For production of Rodger and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma, the designer wanted large post to give the illusion of a large barn. The original design called for 8”x8” wooden beams. Due to the total height and large top and needing to be mobile, wood was not going to be the best option as they would be too top heavy and dangerous. We ordered polystyrene columns instead. I attached ¼” Lauan to the back for ease of assembly, carved it with a hot knife and applied coatings and paint to make them look like wooden beams. The end result gave us a light weight yet solid looking barn.
