The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) hosts an annual Concrete Canoe Competition, attracting universities and student chapters nationwide. This elite event provides students with a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience and to test their skills using a concrete mix design and project management.
Universal Foam Products has assisted various universities each year with their canoe designs. Based on the university chapter's budget, timeline, and skill level, Universal Foam Products offers either a complete CNC Foam canoe mold or custom-sized blocks for students to cut in-house.
This university in Troy, NY, sought assistance in creating a 21-foot hybrid mold for ultra-lightweight concrete casting. With a limited budget and a tight deadline, they opted to purchase 16 EPS Foam blocks measuring 12" x 24" x 36". The students used a hot wire to cut the individual blocks, which were then aligned and glued together to form the mold depicted in the attached images. The team secured third place in the canoe manufacturing process at the Upstate NY-Canada ASCE Student Symposium.
