When M Natal Contractor’s needed EPS geofoam for an addition at the Folgers Coffee plant in New Orleans we contacted Universal Foam Products. Universal put together a very competitive price that helped us win the contract and delivered the geofoam in a timely manner to keep us on schedule. The project called for a slab to be formed over the EPS15 geofoam creating reinforced knee walls in the voids between the sections of geofoam. The edges of the sections of EPS15 needed to be chamfered and this was done on site to reduce the number of unique pieces of geofoam to be installed. The project went very smoothly.

The golf ball pictured was created from a 30″ Large Polystyrene Ball ( EPS Sphere ) and used in a tradeshow booth for MGC Developers. They design and construct miniature golf courses and various other attractions for the family entertainment industry.

This pool project, the Hyatt Place on Delray Beach in Pineapple Grove Florida called for EPS geofoam as light weight void fill under the concrete pool. After reviewing the prints we sent over a quote for the product and a preliminary sketch of how it was to be installed. The contractor liked the price and layout. The real time saving part of the project for the customer was the tapered sheets to form the bottom slope of the pool. It was sloped at a 1/12 pitch in a 44’ run with all of the pieces precut and labeled. The customer was very pleased with the geofoam and the documentation provided on site that made the installation easy. They were also pleased that after the order was placed we had the foam on the job within a week.

Polyethylene is a closed cell foam material with a wide range of applications in industry. Ethafoam® is a registered trademark for a line of polyethylene foam manufactured by Sealed Air Corporation. Polyethylene is used in the construction, packaging and sports and leisure industries. It is the principal material used for floatation in Coast Guard approved floatation vests and in floating booms used to contain oil spills and debris. It is used to make protective padding for martial arts equipment and gym mats. It is an incredibly tough and resilient material.
It is used by the military for all types of cushion and padding applications.
Ethafoam® polyethylene is available in densities from 1.5 lbs. per cubic foot to 9 lbs. per cubic foot. The most commonly used for packaging is the 1.5 lb. density which goes by the name Ethafoam® 150. The 2.2 lb. density is Ethafoam® 220, etc.
Polyethylene is available in rolls from 1/32” to ½” thick. It can be cut into sheets, blocks and shapes. The material is die-cut and fabricated for an infinite number of packaging applications. Both standard polyethylene and Ethafoam® are available in any thickness.

Both STYROFOAM™ Brand foam and EPS (expanded polystyrene) can be used to create large letters, numbers and shapes for any occasion. In the past we have created huge letters and numbers for parade floats, large letters for birthday and anniversary celebrations. We have produced large letters for colleges and high schools for special events. Really huge letters were produced for a stage production of Cinderella.
Whatever the occasion; wedding, birthday, anniversary or special occasion we can provide you with EPS or STYROFOAM™ Brand letters, numbers or special shapes in any size and shape. They can be painted or sprinkled with glitter. You are only limited by your imagination.

The Days of ’47 Parade is an annual parade presented by The Days of ’47, Inc. The three-hour event is held in Salt Lake City starting at 9:00 a.m. MDT on July 24th, the same day as Pioneer Day, a Utah state holiday. Dave Christensen, who is an illustrator by trade, was the creator of this wonderful project.

Custom panels and shapes created using STYROFOAM™ Brand foam and EPS (expanded polystyrene) are used for creating parade floats for businesses, schools, churches and other organizations. STYROFOAM™ Brand foam panels are typically used where the panels need to be thin and still very strong. EPS is used to create 3 dimensional shapes in applications where much larger panels or large blocks are required. Platforms can be made to stand on and seats can be created also.
EPS is popular for parade floats for schools and churches because the material is easy to cut and can be painted with any latex paint. Multiple pieces or blocks can be glued together with a number of readily available adhesives. They can be cut with a standard saw or hot knife or hot wire tool. Artistically inclined students or staff can create the props for the parade float.

There are three different types of foam board insulation commonly used in the construction industry. Some are used interchangeably and others are only used for specific applications. The three different materials are EPS (expanded polystyrene), extruded polystyrene and polyisocyanurate.
EPS (expanded polystyrene)
EPS is the most economical of the form board insulations and is used in the widest range of applications. It is available in densities from just under 1 lb per cubic foot to 3 lbs per cubic foot. The R-Value ranges from 3.3 to 4.7 depending upon the density. The Type I EPS has an R-Value that is almost identical to that of fiberglass insulation. Other densities have a higher R-Value. EPS foam insulation is available from ¼” to 36” thick x 48” wide and lengths up to 24’ in some parts of the US. It is also available in almost any two dimensional shape. EPS is by far the most versatile foam insulation board on the market.
XPS (extruded polystyrene)
There are four major manufacturers of extruded polystyrene in the United State. Each one is distinguishable by its color. Dow Chemical produces STYROFOAM™ Brand extruded polystyrene that is commonly referred to in the construction industry as blue board. Owens Corning produces extruded polystyrene that is pink, Diversifoam’s product is yellow and Pactiv’s is green. The R-Value of extruded polystyrene is 5 per inch and it is available in compression strengths ranging from 15 psi @10% deformation to 100 psi @ 5% deformation. All manufacturers do not make all densities.
Extruded polystyrene is more expensive than expanded polystyrene. It is only available in 24” x 48” and 48” x 96” panels ranging from ¾” thick to 4” thick depending upon the compression strength.
Polyisocyanurate
Polyisocyanurate has the highest R-Value of any of the foam board insulation materials. The R-Value is generally 6 per inch but it can be higher, depending upon the product and application. It can also be purchased in very high compression strengths. It is most commonly used in commercial roofing applications because it provides the highest R-Value with the least amount of material. It is available in a range of thicknesses and can be cut in custom sizes and shapes for specialty projects. It is more expensive than EPS or extruded polystyrene in the lower compression strengths. Polyisocyanurate is not used in applications where it could come into contact with the ground or be exposed to the elements.

Anna Neimark an Assistant Professor at the USC School of Architecture ordered .9 lb density EPS foam from Universal Foam for her architectural project. The project started out with Anna providing CAD Files to us and we then cut the EPS foam to her specifications out of 38” x 48” x 96” foam blocks. The blocks were then shipped to WUHO – School of Architecture Woodberry University in Los Angeles, CA. where the project “Infrastructural Monument” was installed for display between Dec 8th – Dec 18th 2012.

We can cut out giant foam letters, numbers and shapes in any size or thickness. Logos, Signs and Props can be made from expanded polystyrene or eps foam.
This picture shows you what you can do with a vivid imagination and a tremendous amount of talent. One of our customers, who is not a professional artist, came up with this idea for their child’s birthday party. He carved and glued together thin layers of EPS – ½”, ¾” and 1”, to create the animal shapes. He then applied a coating and paint to create the amazing finished product you see here. The animals were the hit of the party with parents who came with their children. They wanted to know where they could buy them.
